kouramades, Corfu

Kouramades is a small, traditional village in the inland of Corfu. In Kouramades you will see many old mansions of the Corfiot countryside, decorated with palm trees and bougainvillea. Kouramades is named after the many kouramas, a plant which thrives in the region. The history of the village begins from before the year 1500 when the Chytiraioi settled in the region after the fall of Constantinople. They were well known for their craftsmanship in making bell-towers. But, the first reference to the village goes back to the middle of the 13^th century, when Kouramades seems to have been the headquarters of the government of ten in the Domain of Epirus.
